Sunday, 1 January 2012 Madrid, Spain – Olympic champion Tirunesh Dibaba was the winner at the 47th ‘San Silvestre Vallecana’ 10Km – an IAAF Silver label Road Race – on Saturday (31).

Dibaba won 5000 and 10,000-meter gold at the 2008 Olympics, but she hadn't raced for 16 months until she showed up at the San Silvestre Vallecana in Madrid, Spain. She barely out sprinted her Ethiopian countrywoman Gelete Burka as both women were timed in 31:30.  "It’s my first time celebrating the New Year far from home but I like the experience," stated Dibaba. "Today’s was my first competition for so long, so I have to be satisfied. I’m now fully recovered from injuries, my trainings are going well and I look forward to defending my two Olympic golds in London next summer."

The winner of the men's 10k in Madrid was Ethiopian teenager Hagos Gebrehiwot, who edged Eritrea’s Teklemariam Medhin as both men were timed in 27:57.
